Rhine Falls in a morning from Zurich

The Rhine Falls sit near Schaffhausen, about an hour from Zurich. They are loud, wide and easy — a viewpoint, a short walk, a photograph, not a hike. That is why they work as a morning: you are back for lunch in the city.

What to expect

• Schloss Laufen side for the classic view over the falls. Platforms can be wet; decent shoes, not polished soles.
• A small boat toward the rock in season, if the family wants to get closer. It is optional and weather-dependent.
• Then Zurich again. Do not add Lucerne the same morning unless you enjoy the motorway.
